WHY UNBELIEVERS CAN CHOOSE TO BELIEVE IN GOD

Some unbelievers claim that it is impossible for them to choose to believe something that they don’t think is true.

After all, how can you just “will” yourself to believe something you don’t? Can you “will” yourself to believe in Santa Claus?

They say they really don’t believe in God, and so they can’t “make themselves” pretend they do.

But there are a number of problems with this claim.

On one hand, it’s true that we can’t believe something that is obviously false.

But there are other areas that are not so clear. Here, in these less clear areas, the objection assumes the will has nothing to do with our beliefs, and that is simply not true.
